John Skinner (1788-1851) was involved in the war effort at the government level from the very beginning. When the British army was approaching Washington, he rode ninety miles overnight to warn President Madison, and became known as “Maryland’s Paul Revere.” Unfortunately the British found out about his actions, and burned the buildings of his estate in retaliation. After the war, he became postmaster for the city of Baltimore, and an influential editor of various agricultural journals.
