Dr. William Beanes
Dr. William Beanes (1749-1828) was born in Maryland, and became one of the state’s most prominent medical doctors. He was one of the founders of the Maryland State Medical Society, which still exists today. Though he is most famous for his association with the War of 1812, he was also a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He served as a doctor for the American army, treating soldiers from such famous battles as Brandywine and Valley Forge. Legend has it he also fought with the Maryland militia in the Battle of Brooklyn, where he narrowly escaped capture by swimming across Long Island Sound.
