Francis Scott Key (1779-1843) was a successful Georgetown lawyer who enjoyed writing poetry, a popular hobby among educated people of the era. He never pursued a writing career, and was even reluctant to publish “The Star-Spangled Banner.”A volume of his poems was published after his death, but did not receive much attention. Politically, he was apathetic for much of his life, perhaps because the American Revolution had caused such bitter division within his family as a child. He became more involved after the War of 1812, eventually working on Andrew Jackson’s presidential campaign. On the issue of slavery, he was a slave-owner who tried to find middle ground. Though he eventually freed his own slaves, he did not support total abolition. He was a founder of the American Colonization Society, which established colonies in Africa for freed American slaves. The Society’s success was limited and ultimately could not solve the problems that led to the Civil War years later.
