major general robert ross

Picture
Major General Robert Ross (1766-1814) was a British military commander born in what is now Northern Ireland. He distinguished himself during the Napoleonic Wars in Europe before being sent to America during the War of 1812. There he shared the command of British forces with Vice Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane and Rear Admiral George Cockburn. He personally led many of the war’s most decisive battles, including the attack on Washington, D.C. He died the same way he lived his life: on the battlefield far from home. As was customary in those days, his body was stored in a barrel filled with 129 gallons of rum until it could be transported to a proper burial site.
