In the summer of 1814, Francis Scott Key was a shy family man with a peaceful and politic-free lifestyle.
A few months later, not only had he fought in a controversial war and witnessed his home's devastation: he wrote a poem that inspired a nation.
To honor the bicentennial of this momentous occasion, Hunger & Thirst is proud to present Contrafact of Freedom in Washington D.C. - the city where these incredible chain of events occurred - and tell the little-known story of how Francis Scott Key wrote the poem that became the lyrics of "The Star-Spangled Banner".
Featuring period music performed live by the actors, Hunger & Thirst is excited to reinvent the definition of "historical drama" by finding the humor, heart, and soul of Francis's journey and his realization that personal participation is the only way for democracy to survive.
