ANTI-BIAS/ANTI-RACISM COMMITMENT

Hunger & Thirst Theatre acknowledges the systemic effects of racism, discrimination, and biases that has influenced the fabric of our organization. As a primarily White-led organization who committed itself to sharing and reexamining timeless stories, we recognize now there is a strong need to reexamine our principles, past actions, and procedures. We see we cannot be a truly warm and welcoming hearthstone for the community if we are not proactively practicing inclusion and equity in every possible way.

In brief: we know we can—and we must—do better.

Therefore, we are committed to completing both immediate and long-term action steps, some of which are listed below:

Action Steps

Reevaluating

Reevaluating all department protocols in order to unearth both conscious and unconscious biases that are influencing our decision-making. Paying particular attention to our past hiring procedures and educating ourselves in how we can foster a more inclusive and equitable audition and interview process.

Code of Conduct

Creating, distributing, and enforcing an Artist Code of Conduct. Holding ourselves and all outside hires accountable if these terms are not followed.

Education

All core company members are required to undergo anti-bias/anti-racism training and attend monthly anti-racism meetings.

Hearthwork

Reimagining our community service initiatives to focus on food insecurity and community building. Learn more by visiting our Hearthwork page.

Ultimately, Hunger & Thirst is committing ourselves to conscious theatre-making. We believe in an artistic environment that is deeply respectful to and considerate of its community. We believe in thoughtfully examining all of our choices before moving into action. We promise not only to listen: we pledge to hear, acknowledge, remain open to change, and take motivated action.
